Vancouver's first neighbourhood. Originally called Granville, it became known as Gastown after John "Gassy Jack" Deighton came to town and opened the first saloon. His habit of speaking at some length lent to his nickname that then spread to the naming of the entire neighborhood.
It's most famous, or most photographed, landmark may be the Steam clock on the corner of Water and Cambrie streets. The steam clock was built over the top of a steam grate for Vancouver's steam heating system and harnessed it to power the clock.
Annual events in the neighbourhood include:
Vancouver International Jazz Festival
Global Relay Gastown Grand Prix
The area is also close to Canada Place; a hub for International cruise ships to dock, the Vancouver Convention Center, and additional activities happening year-round along the waterfront.
Filled with Instagram worthy locations throughout the neighbourhood! Fill your camera roll with shots from Gassy Jack to the Steam Clock; with breakfasts at the Twisted Fork or lunch at Water Street Café.
